Time: Approximately 3 minutes
Casting: One woman
Excerpt from Mary’s Monologue:
MARY: “Impossible! How could you bear the Son of God?”
I get this question all the time. I try to explain it to them. I tell them about the angel. But they look at me and say, “Why would God choose you? You’re too young and so…ordinary.”
They don’t understand so I tell them, “God delights in working through the ordinary. When he uses ordinary people, that makes his miracles seem even more extraordinary.”
But they shake their heads and walk away laughing.
(imitating their laughter) “What a storyteller! Did you hear what she said about the angel? I mean, really!”
It makes me feel so small. It’s hard enough being an unwed pregnant girl, but their looks and comments are even worse. It’s not the life I would have chosen. But it’s God’s plan. When he sends you an angel, what can you do? I have to admit, I was scared when I saw him in my room.
But the angel sensed my fear and said, “Do not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God.”
Which is about the best compliment you can get from an angel. But he wasn’t done yet. He had news. Big news.
(As the angel) “You will be with child and give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”
