Excerpt of A King without a Crown
What can you tell
from a man’s family tree?
The lineage behind him,
how he came to be,
the name he was given,
a faith passed down,
or was this craftsman
a king without a crown?
What if you started
and went back in time
14 generations
to a man passed his prime?
The Father of nations
through whom all are blessed,
we call him Abraham,
but he passed the test.
When asked to give up
his one and only son
the one of the promise
(What would you have done?)
I would have tried
to use an excuse
to save my small boy
from this violent abuse.
I would have tried
to get him away
and hide him from harm
for a night and a day.
But Abram, this
patriarch of old
got up the next day
and left sheep in the fold.
And with his son
he set his face
for Mt Moriah
and his God of grace.
And God did provide
a ram in the thicket.
So Abraham’s son
ran over to pick it
out of the thorns
and then tied it’s feet
and then felt the flames
of sacrificial heat.
It was supposed to
be him, lying there
dead on the alter,
but their God did care
and it was there
that He would provide.
It was there Abram saw
sin and grace collide…
